Carlos Casas: Outer Image

Carlos Casas, artist and filmmaker from Catalonia, currently living in Paris, has been collaborating now for several years with e/static, and his last event, which actually took place at blank, dates back to 2010, when his audio-visual work Avalanche, the outcome of a collaboration with Phill Niblock, was showcased. This is his first solo exhibition (if one doesn’t count the 2008 project with Thomas Köner “Ways to Nowhere”), and is, moreover, actually partly connected to Avalanche, since it includes two unpublished pictures taken in the same places where the video was shot, in Pamir.
Other photographic images (these too, in part, unpublished) were shot by Casas in Siberia, at the time of his “fieldworks”, showcased in the 2008 exhibition; taken together, these photographs allow us to look back on his already vast body of work, created over the course of almost 15 years.
Carlos is currently pursuing an ambitious film project (“Cemetery”, which he had already embarked on several years ago) about the search for the legendary elephants' graveyard, a sort of place/non-place between India, Sri Lanka and Nepal, which has always aroused his curiosity. The exhibition also includes a new editing of the video recently presented in Marseille, at the cinema festival FIDMarseille (as a rough ‘cut 1’ of his work in progress), where he won an award, along with a whole new video, also an essential part of the “Cemetery” project.
The title of the exhibition is the same of the text written by Carlo Fossati [see below] for the recently published - by Corraini Edizioni - monograph “End. Journeys to the end of the world”, and the aim is to draw from that very text in order to embark on a brief, though intense, journey through Carlos Casas’ whole body of work. Where the element of travel - always stemming from the attraction towards the unknown and something that, invisible, seems to be lost - is on-going.
